How Does Stress Affect Growth
Growth
How does stress affect Growth? This is a pretty well documented area in the study of endocrinology.I suppose the most disturbing area that we can look at is that of Dwarfism. It's not caused by the fact that children are subject to stress through school, or their parents changing location every couple of years and the children being subject to new school mates. Dwarfism occurs when a child is exposed to extreme stress. It happens when it is going through its most important growth periods and is deprived of the essentials needed for growth. There have been many cases where children have been locked up, to give an example, in a closet and given food through a feeding hole. These children suffered what is known as dwarfism. How does stress affect health? The extreme stress situation hindered their growth. Strangely enough, if these children were found and were cared for and nurtured, their growth would resume and return back to normal growth levels. In the thirteenth century, King Frederick of Sicily conducted an experiment because he wanted to know which was the perfect language for humans. So he took some children, locked them into separate rooms. He gave them regular meals, clean linen every day. They had no contact, either verbally or physically with any one. He was expecting that the children would show some natural tendency towards speaking the true natural language for humans. Unfortunately all the children died. His experiment failed. In 1915, in the US, the mortality rate in orphanages was 100%. To be sent to an orphanage was a death sentence. We need to bear in mind that at this time and only up until quite recently, kids in orphanages were treated very disconnectedly and distantly.
Stress and Love
So what has become apparent after many years of research and also some experimentation on animals, is that, LOVE is the most important thing that children can experience that allows them to grow. Kids may be brought up under the most terrible of conditions but given nurturing touch and loving care, and they will grow up to be big and strong. Give these same children the best of everything, but take away the loving touch and care and they stop growing, and eventually die.
Stating the Obvious
You might think that I'm stating the obvious. It wasn't all too long ago that your parents were brought up on avoiding the 'viscous practice' of picking up a baby when it cries, not breast feeding the baby and making sure the baby slept on its own in a separate bedroom as early as possible. Recently, premature births have been treated differently. Instead of detaching the baby and leaving it in an incubator where it has no bodily contact a group of nurses started to massage the babies regularly every day. The growth rates of infants increased dramatically and they were returned to the mother much earlier than those babies that were left in the incubators and not massaged.Today, premature births are given straight to the mother, because we finally understand that it is not so much the milk that the baby yearns for growth and health, it's LOVE that babies need.Midwifery in Europe now teaches mothers how to stimulate the growth of their children through regular whole body massage using the Leboyer Method. Crying babies are soothed and mellowed and the massage stimulates the growth hormones for healthy children. This is why for us adults, relationships, massage and social contact is so important for our development.
