Our Planet
It's the Only One We've Got
Our planet has a phenomenal view. All you need to do is look into the night sky and see the millions, if not billions of stars and galaxies, then realize that what we possess on planet Earth is something extra special. This makes each and every individual on Earth extra special. So each and every extra special individual should treat this haven extra specially. Just as we are responsible for our own personal health, we are all responsible for the health of our planet. Industrialization and population growth has demonstrated the impact we, as humans can have on the environment, the air, water, plants, people and animals that habitat our planet. We influence this planet tremendously.Developed nations, such as the US, have the greatest impact on the environment of our planet, North America producing 25% of all green house gases, with China deemed to rapidly overtake this quota. Take a look at the state of health of developed nations in general and you can see that an above average portion of the population is
unhealthy, overweight
and disease ridden. This reflects on the state of health of our Planet. Unhealthiness is due to imbalance. Imbalances create disturbances in the equilibrium of systems. Systems regulate themselves....and this is what we need to do to create a balance with our environment. Status and lifestyle has become more important to us than responsibility for our planet. As our standardised world strives for even higher standards of living, it is easy for the bulk of us to get caught up in their own world and own personal struggle.
Do You Want To RUN YOUR CAR ON WATER?
Consumerism and egoism leads to isolation and cultural impoverishment. There is little reason to be concerned about issues beyond our own front door. As individuals, futility dictates the extent to which we can do something to change our world. So we do nothing and continue consuming and adding to the problems of our planet. Only as a responsible group of concerned individuals that come together as a
community
on a generally accepted platform can we achieve change. We need the right expertise and direction to do so.
Interest in Sustainability
Sustainability is both a philosophy for better living and a solution for the problems created by our dependence on fossil fuels and the impacts of green house gases on climate change.
Climate change
, Green Buildings, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, Green Power, Organic/ Local/ Slow Foods and Permaculture are several large and growing solution spaces where solar and clean energy play a key role. All of these are growing rapidly in supporters. The concepts of Carbon Neutrality, Zero Footprints and Religious Environmental Stewardship are philosophies and values that drive their practitioners towards sustainable living arrangements. Virtually all of these topics stress actions and ways of living that minimize an individual's impact on the environment of our planet. The key is to discover what matters to you and what will motivate you to action.
Inaction on Climate Change is Costliest Option
Researchers say that inaction in responding to the challenges of climate change will cost billions of dollars. In a new report, researchers at the
University of Maryland
warn that the costs of global warming could place major strains on government budgets, personal income and job security. The researchers warn that rising temperatures, decreased precipitation and rising sea levels will cost the United States billions of dollars each year unless immediate action is taken to curb the effects of global warming. In a newly released report, University of Maryland researchers say all too often inaction is motivated by the perceived high cost of reducing destructive greenhouse gas emissions. Researchers are exploring strategies for curbing these emissions, but implementation of many of those strategies has been hindered because of their cost. Not making the changes that are necessary is costly as well. The impact of climate change is already felt on agriculture, on forestry, on industry, on transportation, as well as the water and energy sectors. Changes in precipitation and water levels can have a ripple effect that hurts not only the environment, but industry and trade as well. These secondary effects of climate change could lead to an increase in the cost of doing business. This could also lead to higher prices, job insecurity and a weaker economy. Policies for easing greenhouse gas emissions are urgently needed to ease the economic repercussions of climate change.
Green Buildings
The buildings in which we live, work, and play protect us from Nature's extremes, yet they also affect our health and environment in countless ways. The design, construction, operation, maintenance, and removal of buildings takes enormous amounts of energy, water, and materials, and generates large quantities of waste, air and water pollution, as well as creating stormwater runoff and heat islands. Buildings also develop their own indoor environments, which present an array of health challenges. Where and how they are built affects wildlife habitat and corridors and the hydrologic cycle, while influencing the overall quality of human life.As the environmental impact of buildings becomes more apparent, a new field called green building is gaining momentum. Green or sustainable building is the practice of creating healthier and more resource-efficient models of construction, renovation, operation, maintenance, and demolition. Research and experience increasingly demonstrate that when buildings are designed and operated with their lifecycle impacts in mind, they can provide great environmental, economic, and social benefits.Elements of green building include: - Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
- Water Stewardship
- Environmentally Preferable Building Materials and Specifications
- Waste Reduction
- Toxics
- Indoor Environment
- Smart Growth and Sustainable Development
Why Build Green?
In the United States, buildings account for:- 39 % of total energy use
- 12 % of the total water consumption
- 68 % of total electricity consumption

on buildings and the environment. The built environment has a vast impact on the environment, human health, and the economy. By adopting green building strategies, we can maximize both economic and environmental performance. Green construction methods can be integrated into buildings at any stage, from design and construction, to renovation and deconstruction. However, the most significant benefits can be obtained if the design and construction team takes an integrated approach from the earliest stages of a building project. Potential benefits of green building can include: Environmental benefits - Enhance and protect biodiversity and ecosystems
- Improve air and water quality
- Reduce waste streams
- Conserve and restore natural resources
Economic benefits - Reduce operating costs
- Create, expand, and shape markets for green product and services
- Improve occupant productivity
- Optimize life-cycle economic performance
Social benefits - Enhance occupant comfort and health
- Heighten aesthetic qualities
- Minimize strain on local infrastructure
- Improve overall quality of life
